Kathryn was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA and received a teaching degree from Temple University. After a long management career with the then Bell of Pennsylvania phone company,
Kathryn dedicated her time to serving in her local churches in Pennsylvania and Connecticut, where she actively participated in community outreach programs and organized various events to support the less fortunate. Alongside her commitment to serving others, she pursued her passion for education by not only teaching adult students in night school but also engaging in her own educational journey at Harvard University as a part-time student.
Kathryn’s love for gardening extended to cultivating a vibrant array of flowers, fruits, and vegetables in her garden, while her avid interest in bird watching led her to join local bird-watching groups and participate in conservation efforts. Additionally, she and her husband, David, embarked on numerous adventures, traveling to distant lands and immersing themselves in diverse cultures, which enriched their lives and deepened their bond.
David was born in Philadelphia, PA and served in the US Army during World War II as an infantry soldier serving in France and Germany. After completing his tour, David, Kathryn and their young son Brian moved to New Mexico where David studied geology at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. After graduation, David began work with the United States Geological Survey organization serving in Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Massachusetts from which he retired after a 30+ year career.
In his retirement, David was an active member in his local American Legion branch and served on the zoning board of his local town in Connecticut. David loved sailing, his lobster trapping, woodworking and traveling the world with his wife Kathryn.
Brian was a highly driven and passionate young man who was deeply committed to the education of deaf and special needs children. He pursued his passion by earning a bachelor’s degree in education from Susquehanna University. Brian then attended Columbia University receiving two master’s degrees in education and in special education followed by his Ph.D. in the field. Throughout his career, Brian made a significant impact in the field of special education. He began as a teacher at the prestigious Lexington School for the Deaf in New York City, where he worked tirelessly to provide a nurturing and enriching learning environment for his students.
Later, he became the first deaf superintendent of the Michigan School for the Deaf, where he continued to build on his extensive knowledge and expertise in the field. Brian was widely regarded as a foremost authority on the education of deaf and special needs children and was frequently invited to present his research and findings to educators and organizations across the globe. Unfortunately, Brian’s life was cut short due to illness, but his legacy and contributions to the field of special education will continue to inspire and benefit generations to come.
