Our Mission Statement

About the McCartney Foundation

In 2014, the McCartney Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, was established as a part of the legacy left by David and Kathryn McCartney in honor of their son the late Dr. Brian D. McCartney.

Our Mission

Our mission is to support and serve individuals and organizations that help the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and other communities with special needs. We partner with these organizations to make a difference in the lives of the individuals they serve. Our strategy focuses on four key support areas:

  • Educational Institutions that serve the Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Educational institutions for the deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) offer unique benefits like immersive language development (ASL), access to Deaf role models and community, specialized staff, smaller classes for individualized support, and a visually accessible learning environment that fosters strong academic, social, and cultural identity for D/HH students
  • Mentorship and Family Support: Mentorship and family support programs for deaf individuals offer immense benefits, fostering stronger family communication (especially ASL skills), positive identity, academic success, and career opportunities by connecting families with deaf role models who share cultural knowledge, build social capital, and provide crucial language and life skills, ultimately empowering deaf youth and their hearing families to thrive in both deaf and hearing worlds.
  • Summer Deaf Camp Programs: Deaf summer camps offer crucial benefits by reducing isolation, boosting self-esteem, and fostering identity through connecting deaf youth with peers and deaf adult role models, improving social skills, language development (ASL/spoken), leadership, and providing a fun, supportive environment to explore interests like STEM or arts, preparing them for future success and celebrating deafness.
  • Job Training and Placement Services: Deaf job assistance programs provide crucial support by building career readiness, confidence, and independence through tailored training (resume, interview skills in ASL), work-based learning (internships), and crucial support like benefit counseling, ultimately increasing employment access, social integration, financial stability, and overall well-being for Deaf individuals by bridging communication gaps and advocating for necessary accommodations.

The institutions we support play a crucial role in equipping individuals with the essential knowledge, skills, and resources they need to succeed and thrive. By collaborating with these institutions, our goal is to foster a culture of learning and empowerment, which enables us to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those served by these organizations.
